Using MRI to select patients for anterior resection (AR) or abdominoperineal excision (APE)

Low rectal cancers (<5cm from the anal verge), compared with all others, have greater positive resection margin rates, attributed to mesorectal tapering and higher perforation risks. In this lecture, Dr. Gina Brown explains how useful MRI is in selecting patients to AR or APE, presenting the additional information provided by MRI such as the height of tumor, the assessment of radial margins and relationship to intersphincteric plane.
