Inauguration

First course

Drums and Chinese dragons welcomed the French delegation led by Professor Jacques Marescaux. The IRCAD (Institute for Research on Cancers of the Digestive Tract) in Strasbourg now has its clone in Taiwan: the ASIA IRCAD Taiwan, a centre of 7,300 square meters modelled on the Strasbourg centre, was opened with great flourish on 26th May 2008 in partnership with the Chang Bing Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, Lugang Town, Changhua County, Taiwan.

It is welcoming surgeons from all over Asia and all surgical fields such as general and digestive surgery, gynecological surgery, urological surgery, cardiovascular surgery, orthopedics, Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), and interventional digestive endoscopy techniques.
The educational aspect is promoted and led by a network of 800 world-renowned experts that IRCAD has gathered over 14 years of intense activity.

With the world's only experimental OR laboratory equipped with 20 operating tables, all linked to a multimedia system, the Asia IRCAD is the most important structural centre in Asia dedicated to training in laparoscopic surgery.

The first course in laparoscopic general surgery started on 27th May 2008 in the ASIA IRCAD Taiwan brand-new facilities; same principle as in the IRCAD in Strasbourg: theory in the morning before the live broadcast of operative procedures on a high-definition screen.
In the afternoon, hands-on course in the experimental OR lab, assisted by experts from the IRCAD that correct their operative moves. Surgeons follow in this way an operative program that lasts for more than 4 hours.

Taiwan's ASIA IRCAD is the first step towards a global expansion of Strasbourg's training centre, Buenos Aires should have its centre for training in minimally invasive surgery in 2009.
