Surgical endoscopes utilize high performance optical technology. The choice of endoscope requires a good deal of consideration since it is one of the most expensive pieces of surgical equipment both in terms of capital cost and maintenance. A good endoscope needs three qualities. It must be able to transmit a good level of brightness, both in bringing light into the operative field and carrying the image to the camera. It must have large depth of field and minimal distortion of image viewed. Finally the endoscope should also be able to withstand the mechanical and thermal constraints of the sterilization processes.
