Although laparoscopic cholecystectomy had originally been described more than 30 years ago, it still remains associated with a major risk of common bile duct injuries. This risk is increased in difficult clinical settings, such as acute cholecystitis. Meticulous attention should be paid to respect gold standards when it comes to the operative technique and to the use of intraoperative guidance methods. These are the prerequisites for an ideal cholecystectomy.
