Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is of multi-microbial etiology appearing as an acute or a subclinical infection. Diagnosis is mainly clinical, since most of the laboratory tests do not have a significant positive predictive value. Treatment is mainly medical, offered either in an outpatient or in an inpatient setting according to PID severity, in order to prevent the most frequent complications which consist mainly of tubal dysfunction problems (infertility) and pelvic abscesses.
