Major biliary tract emergencies are acute cholecystitis, ascending cholangitis, and acute pancreatitis. These conditions usually arise as a consequence of stones obstructing the biliary tree or the gallbladder. Less frequently, they may result from benign or malignant strictures of the biliary tree, biliary tree manipulation, or biliary sludge. Despite therapeutic advances, these conditions still cause significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in the elderly. In this Lecture, Dr. Benoît Navez shows the surgical treatment of acute cholecystitis.
